1000birds.com started participating in the World Series of Birding in 2006. It was a modest first attempt at this event as we had three participants (Bob, Penelope and myself) and we only covered parts of Atlantic and Cape May counties in South Jersey.

In the next three years (2007-2009) we decided to cover the whole state. This required a lot more effort both in scouting and during the event itself. Bob has scouted the north extensively and we’ve been able to locate most of the key areas that are visited by the top teams. This required a week of scouting prior to each event . Scouting in the south was left up to me with Jonathan concentrating in Cape May. The race itself has been grueling. We cover more than 600 miles in 28 straight hours of driving (it’s a 24 hour event but it takes us 3-4 hrs to get to the starting point).

This arrangement has work fairly well for us with a high count of 176 birds in 2008. However, it is very demanding and we’re coming to the realization that it is almost impossible to reach the 200 mark unless we have more resources especially for scouting. In 2010 we scaled back and only covered Cape May County. We almost saw as many birds as the year before and had a lot more fun and a lot less driving!!

We’re very proud to have raise over $5,000 for the NJ Audubon Society and the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. We have pestered friends, relatives and colleagues and we're grateful to all of those that have contributed.
