I work in the Gaming industry which means I get to visit Las Vegas often. That has given me an opportunity to explore the surrounding areas and add many new species to my list.
Henderson Bird Reserve is a waste managment area located within minutes from the strip and provides excellent photo opportunities.
Corn Creek is located 15 miles north of Las Vegas and is a small yet very productive area thanks the springs that feed into a creek and several ponds and a number of trees that give numerous birds food and cover.
Mt. Charleston towers some 10,000 feet above the Las Vegas Valley and provides habitat for many bird species. It also has much cooler temperatures and varied mountain habitats including alpine forests which is not what you expect when you visit for the first time.
Ash Meadows NWR is a little futher out (about 2 hours northwest of Las Vegas) but worth the drive. I first visited the refuge on my way to Deathe Valey many years ago but my second trip was all about bird photography and yielded 8 new species.
Lovell Canyon is a lesser known area that I visited based on some posts on the web.
